In the heart of the city – in the heart of life – we work for those who need it most. Those who have difficulty finding their footing. Those who may find it difficult to feel welcome elsewhere. Those who carry heavy life stories of homelessness, abandonment, serious mental and physical illnesses, and a life of addiction. Here, we meet each individual with great professionalism, respect, and inclusiveness – and with an unwavering belief that everyone has the right to dignity.
Our Work
We run drug consumption rooms, health clinics, day centres and a night café, shelters, shared accommodation, a second-hand shop, kitchens and social activities in Vesterbro. Our core mission is to create calm in chaos – to provide space, support and care for people who are rarely met with warmth and understanding elsewhere.
We work to reduce harm with citizens who use drugs, focusing on reducing the physical, social and psychological harms of drug use. We distribute clean needles and smoking equipment, we provide first aid in the event of overdoses, and we actively work to strengthen the user’s self-care and health. We do not insist on drug abstinence, we insist on dignity.
At the same time, we work on a relationship basis based on the individual’s wishes, strengths and needs. With recognition, authenticity and respect, we support residents and vulnerable people in taking small steps, when and if they are ready. We believe that change happens in relationships and that development requires trust.
Our Approach
We work from a recognising approach with a focus on our residents and vulnerable people feeling seen, heard, respected and accepted. Our professional standpoint is based on recovery, empowerment and self-determination. We are working to implement the Low Arousal 2 and Gentle Self-Defence methods, which support the work we have been doing for years: A conflict-de-escalating, well-being-promoting and gentle collaboration, where the citizen’s perspective and boundaries are central.
We work with people – not “users”. We believe that people develop best in safe, stable relationships. Therefore, our staff is a crucial part of the effort.
